Hard Words: Why Aren't Kids Being Taught to Read?
This is the first documentary of two by Emily Hanford released on September 10, 2018 in which she addresses the way reading is taught, and the consequences and controversy surrounding this. This podcast was likely one of the factors that created a critical mass of educators who are now finally allowed to speak about the science of reading without feeling like outsiders. Since the second documentary, At a Loss for Words, came out in August, 2019, there has been a massive shift in the dominant discourse about beginning reading instruction and its impact on the human rights of every child to be able to access print efficiently and effectively.
